Everyone would love to have bright, white teeth. For some, this is more easily attained than for others. Dental stain or discoloration can occur for many reasons, but with diligent care and the right tools you can enjoy the cleanest and whitest teeth available to you … daily teeth cleaning and regular visits to the dentist provide the basis for a beautiful smile.
Teeth can take on a yellowish appearance over time. This may be due to aging as the protective enamel covering on teeth may start to thin out. Or this can be due to diet, overzealous brushing, tobacco use, certain medications, or maybe you just are genetically predisposed to having a yellow tint in your teeth.
There are some tips on how to keep your teeth looking their best:
Daily care – Make sure you brush and floss daily as directed. The tools you use are important; a hard bristle toothbrush and vigorous brushing can wear away enamel too soon. Use a soft bristle toothbrush and less aggression. An electric toothbrush may be an asset for your teeth cleaning.
Foods stain – Become aware of the foods and beverages that are known to stain teeth. Coffee, tea, cola, and red wine are beverage offenders – drink cold drinks with a straw to allow most of the beverage to bypass the teeth.
Familiarize yourself with the foods that stain – tomato based sauces; dark sauces like soy; many berries; curry; and foods that contain artificial coloring. Plan to brush or rinse thoroughly following consumption. Always have a glass of water with your meals to help flush away offending foods and beverages.
Smoking – Any kind of tobacco use can stain or yellow your teeth. The obvious solution is to quit, or better yet, never start.
Medications – We sometimes need medicine to maintain health – follow the advice given for use. Discuss what you are taking with your dentist to see if there are alternatives available that will be easier on your dentition.
